VR GunStock
for Meta Quest 3
I wanted a fun project to work on during Thanksgiving break in 2023 and I recently got a Quest 3 headset at the time. So, I decided to design my own gunstock to play first-person shooter games with!
But design a basic magnetic gunstock would just be too basic and not as fun to design. So, I added a pump-action mechanism to it by adding a compliance mechanism.
There are a few things I want to highlight about this little project! The first one is a minor and, dare I say, boring part that has a very big impact on the gunstock! I am talking about the pin joints holding pipes together. What make them special are the 36 grooves with 10 degrees increment, allowing me to adjust the angle precisely and lock them together tightly without slipping.
The smooth surface one I design before adding groove cannot hold the weight of the controllers when they are attached. So, theses grooves help a lot!
Another thing I want to highlight is the pump action mechanism. Here I utilize a very simple compliance mechanism and a guided rail to create a spring loaded slider. It works like a charm but very noisy due to the rough surface of the 3D printed parts.
Overall, this project was a lot of fun and I got to utilize many minor mechanical designs I picked up throughout my engineering journey. Plus, I now have a gunstock to make my VR experience more immersive!
